The Demand for River Cruises In Europe Continues To Increase

The demand for river cruise trips continues to increase. In 2016 1,36 million passengers took a trip up or down a European river. No other form of travelling brings so much peace and quiet, comfort and diversity like the river cruise segment. Travelling with a swimming hotel is gaining more and more popularity and Germany was able to recognize an increase of 11.951 cruise guests, resulting in a total of 435.586 sold cruises on German rivers, in 2016. The average time a guest spends on a river cruise boat is 6.9 nights. Most guests come from America and Canada. In 2016, 22 out of 31 newly built river cruise ships were added to the European rivers. Moreover, the European river cruise industry secures 13.971 workplaces on board the ships and 3540 on shore. Also affected by the growth are suppliers, tour agencies, harbours and additional service providers on shore.

While on a river cruise on the Danube, Rhine or Elbe guests can discover many beautiful things. Next to famous sightseeing stops and cities, guests are able to enjoy beautiful and divers landscapes which are home to various species of birds, fish and plants. The regions along the Rhine and Danube are lined with idyllic villages, old castles, impressive rock formations, long valleys, endless forests and traditional towns. One of Germany’s most beloved cities along the Danube is Passau. Passau is surrounded by 3 rivers, the blue Danube, the green Inn and the black Ilz. While standing on deck of the cruise ship guests can see how these three rivers meet and join one another. This is why Passau is also called the three river city. Additionally the city offers its guests a historic cathedral, a beautiful old town and a church of pilgrimage (Mariahilf). Cologne is the most known destination for guests’ cursing the Rhine River. The monument of the Cologne cathedral has been welcoming guests to the city for over 2000 years. Additionally Cologne has a beautiful old town, a modern Rhine shore, a cable car and the Hohenzollern-Bridge with countless love locks. However, Passau and Cologne are only two out of numerous beautiful, old and historic cities situated along the two rivers.
